Technical Leader Additive Manufacturing at Ford Motor Company

Dr. Ellen Lee is Technical Leader of Additive Manufacturing for Research & Advanced Engineering at Ford Motor Company, responsible for leading the development and implementation of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies for functional use in the automotive sector. She established Ford’s dedicated AM research program to enable its use to drive product innovation, enhance quality, and improve efficiency and flexibility in manufacturing. In this role, Dr. Lee advises the strategic direction for AM and its integration across the enterprise.


With over 20 years of experience in the automotive industry, Dr. Lee has focused on advancing and developing new technologies in materials and manufacturing. She is recognized as a thought leader inside and outside of Ford for her ability to identify new emerging technologies with high impact for Ford. Since 2009, Dr. Lee has served as a spokesperson for Ford’s research and development of technology advances in areas from nanocomposites to sustainable materials to additive manufacturing.Prior to her current role, she served as the Plastics Research Team Leader, developing a vast knowledge of automotive materials and their durability and performance requirements. Her deep knowledge of conventional mass production processes allows her to identify benefits and gaps of AM technologies for volume production.


Dr. Lee received her Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern University and her Doctorate (Ph.D.) degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. She serves on the board of directors for SPE’s AM/3D Printing SIG, the Executive Committee of America Makes, and has a history of participation and advisory with organizations including SME, SWE, and NSF, among others.
